Design Brief

Create a multi-layered collage promoting my business and brand identity.

The was one of the earlier designs for my graphic design business. My main objective with this brand collage was to show a range of aesthetics and moods, fantasy side by side with reality, in an effort to attract customers wanting a graphic designer who could cater to their specific needs, whatever they may be.

Inspiration

I was really inspired by the art of Tricia Oldfield and loved her use of mixed media as well as acrylics to create images that were as whimsical and bright as they were moody and macabre. Her pieces how the possibilites of how I could incorporate multiple moods and aesthestics into one design.

I also took inspiration from my hometown of San Antonio, Texas, and the bright pinks, blues, and greens that are associated with our annual celebration, Fiesta.

I ultimately wanted the main theme of my collage to be beautiful yet seemlingly contrasting images, colors, and typographies.

Style Guide

The two different fonts and their sizes were chosen because they were visually contrasting yet still complementary.

The use of all uppercase then all lowercase lettering in the logo may be considered conflicting, but this was an intentional way to contribute to the theme of “contrasts” in my collage.

The colors chosen are not necessarily considered complementary colors on the color wheel, but also added contrast.

Drafting

Adobe Photoshop was used to combine nine different images into one collage.

Content-aware allowed me to remove some power lines from a photo I personally took of the tree.

Color saturation was adjusted and made consistent throughout each image to balance the “moody” feel with the bright pops of color.

The end result is a moody feel that is contrasted with bright colors, with reality and fantasy side by side. Through my collage, my audience gets the message that I can help them create designs that are traditional with a modern edge, or girly with a touch of the macabre. Each image within the collage is also beautiful independent of each other, assuring my audience that they can also come in with just one style in mind.
